Earthworm Jim’s Donkey Kong Mode?! (The Greatest Cheats In Gaming)

Did you know that GoldenEye wasn’t the only game to feature DK Mode? You’ll never guess that Earthworm Jim did, too!

“Lee, didn’t you already cover DK Mode?”. Well, yes I did, you observant and fiercely loyal viewer, you. Funny thing is that the game I’m going to be looking at this week came out two years before Rare’s GoldenEye 007, so really, it originated DK Mode and goes even further beyond the N64 releases’ elongated arms and giant heads.

Earthworm Jim: Special Edition was released for Windows PCs and the SEGA CD/Mega CD add-on, which took the existing 16-bit version on the Genesis or Mega Drive, made the animation even better, added a CD audio soundtrack, a new level and other changes to the original game which was released the year prior.

Unfortunately for Shiny’s game, it was released around the same time as Nintendo and Rare’s Donkey Kong Country, which pretty much blew Earthworm Jim away in terms of hype and marketing, stealing a lot of thunder from this game. You could see why the team at Shiny may have gotten a little bit peeved about this.

Anyway, back to the game at hand. This Special Edition version of the game also added more cheat codes, including a few that changes Jim’s worm. There’s this one, activated by pausing the game and pressing B, A, A, A, A, A, B, C. This gives Jim an ever so fetching afro. Pausing the game and pressing C , A, A, A, A, A, B, C will change it to a red afro, like some sort of terrifying clown. Not weird enough? How about B, C, A, A, A, A , B, C for some alien-like antennae. A fan of outdated slapstick comedy? A, A, A, A, A, A, B, C will give you this classic disguise.

But the code you came here for, is the aforementioned DK Mode. While playing, pause the game and type in this code: Down + C, B, A, A, A, A, B, C, B, A, A, A, A, A, B, C.

Unpause and look closely at our hero. Yes, that’s Donkey Kong and yes, that’s an arrow in his head. Jealousy will get you nowhere, Shiny – Still, it’s rare to see a developer take such an open potshot at a competitor, and it is a little funny.
