This week, I’m delving back into a series that is as known for its secrets as it is for its violent content – Are you ready for the super-secret Mortal Kombat 2 Fergality finishing move?

Mortal Kombat II is a vastly superior sequel to the original arcade smash, expanding the roster of characters, taking the series unique narrative even further, and of course, adding even more of the always-popular Fatalities. In addition, the machine was stacked full of secrets, from hidden opponents to a version of Pong.

When it came to the home versions, many of these secrets were retained, but the was one port that featured something no other version of the game had – A secret and entirely unique finishing move called the Fergality, that was only found in the Mega Drive port, programmed by now-defunct developers, Probe Software.

But to see this finishing move for yourself, there’s an extra bit of cheating to be had. At the game’s menu, enter the Options menu and highlight Done. Here, you’ll need to enter a cheat code:

Left, Down, Left, Right, Down, Right, Left, Left, Right, Right.

A Test Mode option will appear, which allows you to enable a number of settings, from one-hit kills to invulnerability. The setting we want to make is to turn on the “Ooh, Nasty” option. This special finishing move can only be performed on a particular stage, The Armory, so you might as well change the Background option on the second page so that stage 6 is selected. This will ensure that every battle takes place in The Armory.

How to perform a Fergality in Mortal Kombat II

Now you can start the game, either in One player or Two player mode. Choose Raiden as your character and when it comes to Finish Him, perform this simple move quickly, from any distance:

Back, Back, Back, Block

The screen will darken, signalling the start of this deadly finishing move. Then, your defeated opponent turns into a squat little man with smoke coming from his arse. You have performed the Mortal Kombat 2 Fergality, and that man is Fergus McGovern, the founder of Probe Software – A UK games industry legend who tragically passed away in February of 2016 at the age of 50.
